Language Learning Levels Explained

To help you choose the right Italian class, here’s a detailed breakdown of each level

Beginner Levels

A1 (Beginner)

  • You can understand and use basic everyday expressions and simple phrases.

  • You can introduce yourself and ask simple personal questions (e.g. name, nationality, where you live).

  • You can interact in a basic way, provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

A2 (Elementary)

  • You can understand and use frequently used expressions related to family, shopping, work, and daily life.

  • You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of basic information.

  • You can describe aspects of your background, immediate environment, and simple needs.

 

Intermediate Levels

B1 (Intermediate)

  • You can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters (work, school, travel, etc.).

  • You can deal with most situations while travelling in an Italian-speaking area.

  • You can write simple texts on familiar topics and describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions.

B2 (Upper Intermediate)

  • You can understand the main ideas of complex texts, including technical discussions in your field.

  • You can interact fluently and naturally with native speakers without much effort.

  • You can produce clear, detailed texts and explain your viewpoints on various topics.

 

Advanced Levels

C1 (Advanced)

  • You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning.

  • You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much need to search for expressions.

  • You can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

C2 (Proficiency/Fluent)

  • You can understand almost everything you hear or read with ease.

  • You can summarise information from different sources and express yourself spontaneously, fluently, and precisely.

  • You can differentiate finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
